One part intellectual and one part journalist, Ron Rosenbaum offers a thick book full of his writing from Esquire, Vanity Fair, The New York Times Magazine, and The New York Observer (where he is currently a columnist). Perhaps not every selection will interest every reader--the diversity of topics is incredible--but there is probably something, or many things, for everyone in The Secret Parts of Fortune.

An outstanding entry is an excerpt from his celebrated book Explaining Hitler. Other highlights include a hilarious interview with Robin Leach (entitled "The Frantic Screaming Voice of the Rich and Famous"), an explanation of why Murray Kempton "is the best prose writer in America," and a short history of computer hackers. One of Rosenbaum's finest pieces focuses on the cancer-cure underground: "False hope springs eternal," he writes, describing how phony cancer "cures seem to spring up and sweep the nation like religious revivals, a new one at least every decade." Yet he's sympathetic--or at least mildly understanding--of the motivations behind the fake healers: the movement isn't "composed mainly of cash-hungry charlatans and snake-oil salesmen eager to make an easy killing off the sufferings and hopes of cancer victims. In fact, among the healers, the prophets, and the alchemists, you find less greed than evangelical fervor--the rapturous conviction of religious visionaries."

Rosenbaum is rougher with Bill Gates; he lights into the billionaire's fabled high-tech home, which he says "exhibits the distinctive feature of the totalitarian mind: the inability to distinguish between private and public spheres. It suggests this isn't just the way he wants to run his house, it's the way he wants to run the world: total surveillance, enforced entertainment, everyone isolated in programmable pods." Yet another standout is Rosenbaum's article on Kim Philby, the British intelligence officer who spied against his native land on behalf of the Soviets. Or did he? Rosenbaum (Explaining Hitler) has collected some previously published essays that span three decades of his accomplished career as a journalist and illustrate his wide-ranging interests. The sheer breadth of this volume, which covers topics such as politics, conspiracy theory, entertainment, crime, and literature, may overwhelm the casual reader, but Rosenbaum's thorough investigations and decisive voice make for an intriguing collection. In "Turn On, Tune In, and Drop Dead," for example, Rosenbaum critiques Dr. Elizabeth K bler-Ross, leader of what he calls the "death-and-dying movement," arguing that K bler-Ross and her followers are misguided: "Death has claimed another victim, the mind of K bler-Ross." No matter what the subject of his scrutiny, Rosenbaum never fears making judgments, but he never rushes to them either; nor does he shy from examining how his subjects have affected him. I make a point of knowing my neighbors, allowing casual greetings to become long conversations, and making time to explore in depth the feelings and perceptions of friends, students, and relatives. These natural conversations provide information, encouragement, and pleasure.Many people say that they are too busy to have long talks. Other people prefer to watch YouTube, play computer games, chat via email rather than talk to relatives, co-workers, and friends. Many Americans, it seems, have forgotten how to hold good, deep conversations - or even a friendly chat on the phone. I suspect this lack of real communication lessens their daily joy. English language learners, of course, face many more barriers to have a satisfying conversation in English. First, English remains a confusing, difficult, and strange language. It's very easy to feel uncomfortable when speaking a new language - whether a second or fourth. English students in my advanced speaking skills courses often ask questions like: How do start a conversation?What questions do I ask? How can I keep a real conversation going? How do I share agreement - or disagreement - in a polite way? How can I share my experiences in clear manner with appropriate vocabulary? We just started working in this workbook and have covered 3 chapters. The questions are representative of U.S. English & culture, but could be used for any English-speaking country. The questions are abundant and stimulate good conversation, apply to various age groups, and the vocabulary is up-to-date. The vocabulary items are well-chosen, the quotes are excellent as they represent a variety of views and tones, and some require a high level of interpretation because of U.S. culture or history. The humor is wonderful. The chapters are all set up in the same way, but the topics are so well-chosen that I don't think it will become repetitive. For variety, I am supplementing with other types of exercises based on the themes: listening comprehension, writing and reading comprehension.

A friend of the author asked me to review Compelling Conversations, and I am glad to do it because this is a truly excellent book. I've taught ESL to adults in East Los Angeles for eighteen years and came across this book just a couple of years ago. I wish I'd known about it sooner. I has become indispensable. It stands head and shoulders above the many other conversation books I've bought and used or considered using with my students.With little or no preparation, students can open this book and start speaking in pairs or groups. With a little creativity on the part of the teacher--warm up and follow up activities--and an ESL class or a conversation class can easily spend two hours working with a single chapter. The discussion questions are well-worded and the themes are accessible to a majority of students. Each list of questions is accompanied by a selection of related vocabulary words and quotations. You certainly get your money's worth in so far as the amount of material provided in this book and, again, the quality of the material is excellent.This wonderful book is for advanced level students. The author's equally wonderful book entitled Compelling American Conversations is fundamentally the same but presented at a more intermediate level (fewer questions per topic and easier language).

I really like this book for the questions. The quotes laced throughout aren't really applicable to my classes, as they are too high-level for most of my students to understand. If you're looking for a book with lots of questions asked in very natural, authentic ways, this is a great resource. This is not a book I would advise students to purchase for themselves, but more of a teacher resource book.

I teach English in Spain, and I was looking for something a little moer interesting than the bland textbooks. I came across Mr. Roth's book in a google search, after reading all the positive reviews, I decided to buy it. I love this book it is great for any type of class setting: one to ones, telephone classes, Skype classes, group classes. These conversation starters are interesting, some serious others lighthearted appropriate for beginners to advanced learners. This book is easy to navigate with the Kindle version allowing you to place bookmarks for future reference. If you are stuck in a rut, and want to liven up your class, pick up this book. You won't be disappointed.

I grabbed this up for the Kindle and I've got to say it's a great resource to have for a teacher on the go. So few texts of quality have made the move to digital format, but I'm glad Compelling Conversations took the jump. Whether you have an iPad or any other device, it's really nice just to pop it open and find topics that you can hit the floor running with for your students.A lot of people have left reviews claiming how good this book is, and I can't agree more. It uses proverbs and quotations in a way that's fully engaging for the students and gets them to go beyond their comfort zone while still having fun. This book is the perfect example of the old "Trick Your Students Into Learning" maxim. Students will use this to have fun while at the same time challenging their speaking skills.The only problem area is with the formatting, but that seems to be pretty standard across all Kindle books. It's getting better, but for me the content is king here.

I bought this book to help prepare for a Speaking Club at our English school. It was very helpful and gave a lot of great quotes and questions to open the lesson, as well as thought provoking activities that gave my students opportunities to open up and share their thoughts.Beyond that, this book has been a helpful resource for regular lessons. Whether it using one of the activities to reinforce a structure or an impromptu speaking exercise when the students finish a written test earlier than expected, this has been a go to source for speaking practice. Best of all, I can keep the Kindle edition on my iTouch, making it instantly available when I need it.

My only critique is that it is harder to use for adolescents (who lack world experience) than for adults. Anyone at an advanced level can use it, though.

I've been using this book in a couple of ESL conversation classes and it has worked wonders. Every lesson is organized the same way, first introducing the topic with a lot of different questions, then presenting useful vocabulary followed by more conversation starters along the same line where students can practice these new words, and finally a plethora of quotes for discussion.There are 45 topics to choose from and one alone, in an upper intermediate to advanced class will take you two or three lesons to get through if done thoroughly.I own several ESL conversation textbooks and this one is easily the one I've gotten the most from. As the title suggests, the conversations do become compelling.Don't be fooled by the index; at first I thought some of the topics listed on it were boring, but on looking over the questions I thought they were well thought-out and can easily be used to start interesting conversations.If you are going to buy one book to use in ESL conversation classes, let it be this one. You won't regret it.

I am a professional mining engineer, with an MBA in Finance and background in mining operations and management consulting. This is the best high level view of the industry I've come across.Given my background, I find this handbook offers simple treatment of most concepts. But this is exactly what I want and expect from a single-volume financial-operational overview of mining. For example, I can get a summary of ore processing and refining for major base and precious metals (an item with which I'm less familiar), and look to a more expansive reference on gold processing where I find I need more information.This is a good reference for experienced geoscientists, and an excellent guide for finance professionals or people more removed from operations.

Great book. As someone with a postgraduate finance education this provided the necessary insight required for valuing companies involved with mining, and to a lesser extent (but not by much) oil & gas. Some people with no experience with finance might wish to choose a supplementary book to enhance their understanding of capital structures, project financing, to understand why/how NPV is used (he does explain it to an appropriate level I believe, but not to a level of detail that you could go away and proclaim "I know finance stuff!").Very comprehensive as it covers the those parts necessary to determine NPV, along with a brief hypothetical case study near the end to tie it all together, which I felt was a great way to structure the book. Some other books try to integrate a case study as you read through the parts of a book, I find this annoying having to flick through various parts of the book to find the relevant parts for the case study, this book puts it all in one place at the end.Second to the valuation aspect is the introductory nature of understanding the geological "variables" one must be aware of when reviewing companies. I especially found the basic information of geology coupled with life cycles of a mining company, from explorer through to producer, to provide a concise reference.I don't work in the investment industry, but I brought this book for my own personal investment purposes.

The first edition was excellent and filled a real gap in the market. I bought quite a few of them to give to my employees over the years. This fourth edition really does not add much - it continues to use a lot of the old material.

Probably ok for investment bankers who are economic with the truth when it comes to operating a mine, but I didn't get value out of this book, the early chapters are very basic and totally biased to the Australian mining industry. I found indicative capital and operating costs very indicative and of little use.A lot of mistakes perhaps printing errors,

I was very disappointed with this handbook -- it was too basic and did not have enough value to justify its excessive $85 price. Returned it to Amazon for a refund...

I thought this book was great value for the price . Around 600-700 pages of content covering the basics of most minerals and hydrocarbons plus business valuation with share price expectations all the way from exploration to production .
