An excellent choice for anyone with hemochromatois or other iron overload diseases. Although written for the medical profession (and I did need to Google some of the words as it get pretty technical) you can easily obtain a better understanding of this dreadful disease. I believe it is a must have book.

I have been diagnosed with Hemochromatosis at age 68. The doctor said it's the genetic form. Never knew about it or anyone in my family that had it but it sure explains all my symptoms. I'm not sick in the head after all. I'm just rusting from the inside out! Have to watch your diet and give blood depending on how severe your iron overload. Most blood tests done do not check your iron level so you could have it and never know it. The book covers many topics and some were too deep for the average reader. You can learn from the Iron Disorder Insitute.com

This book is written for medical professionals, but it is understandable if you take your time and have a good medical dictionary with you. The subject is way to important for people concerned with their health, not to have a handle on. This is a huge risk factor for coronary events, and quite likely, more decisive as a predictive factor than cholesterol. There are ways discussed that would help you monitor your risk and improve your profile. Highly recommended for those motivated enough to want to know.

Everyone should have this informative book on the dangers of iron in your diet. The world in general is getting too much iron and needs to know more about it whether they have Hemocromatosis or not. I have purchased copies of this book, which can be purchased so cheaply at Amazon,for my whole family since my son died of Hemochromatosis, a disease of iron overload.

Ever since i began switching to organic food, I began questioning the need for "reduced iron" in fortified foods and whether they were actually harmful with daily consumption...especially now with most omnivores consuming more than the RDA for iron in addition to iron rich meats regularly. It was the scarcity of meat for soldiers which led to the fortification of grain/processed food and carried over to the general population. This practice continues today without review of the efficacy or safety of iron fortification. While Dr. Weinberg doesn't approach this topic and its possible contribution to iron disorders, a big over site, he does provide some interesting connections to chronic diseases and iron disorders.The Dr. Weinberg presents some great informational statistics, but the statistics don't quite connect the dots for me. What would be interesting is to see some cross-over studies regarding the "Eat Right for your Blood Type" (Dr. D'Adamo) and the findings that see if there is a relationship between blood type and iron metabolism disorders. Many of the iron metabolism disorders seem to be genetically identifiable as Weinberg indicates throughout his book, and blood type is also a genetic trait. Combining these two areas of studies may shore up the statistical findings and provide more understanding and therefore, better dietary modifications specific to iron needs according to blood type/genetics.Other than the questions that this book left me with, it is a great place to start learning about iron disorders.

This is must have for anyone who has or knows someone with Hemochromatosis.Most docs dont know the stuff in this book

About the Author
Jane S. Zembaty, professor of philosophy at the university of Dayton, specializes in classical Greek philosophy and social ethics. She coedited the first three editions of Biomedical Ethics, and her published work includes articles on Greek philosophy, such as "Plato's Republic and Greek Morality on Lying" and "Aristotle on Lying."

David DeGrazia earned a B.A. from the University of Chicago, an M.St. from Oxford University, and a Ph.D. from Gerogetown University, each in philosophy. He has been teaching philosophy and biomedical ethics at George Washington University since 1989. He is the author of Taking Animals Seriously (Cambridge University Press) and of articles published in such journals as Journal of Medicine and Philosophy, Public Affairs Quarterly, History of Philosophy Quarterly, and Southern Journal of Philosophy.

Thomas A. Mappes holds a B.S. in chemistry from the University of Dayton and a Ph.D. in philosophy from Georgetown University. He is professor of philosophy at Frostburg State University, where he has taught since 1973. He is the coeditor (with Jane S. Zembaty) of Social Ethics: Morality and Social Policy (McGraw-Hill, 4/e, 1992) and his published work appears in journals such as American Philosophical Quarterly and Kennedy Institute of Ethics Journal. In 1985, the Frostburg State University Foundation presented him with the Faculty Achievement Award for Teaching.

About the Author

Walter Parker teaches in the College of Education at the University of Washington in Seattle. He studies K–12 social studies education and, in particular, the civic development of youth. His other books include Teaching Democracy: Unity and Diversity in Public Life (2003); and Social Studies Today: Research & Practice (2015). Walter was born and raised in Englewood, Colorado, on Denver’s south side, and taught social studies for ten years in Adams County on Denver’s north side.

Terence Beck teaches in the School of Education at the University of Puget Sound in Tacoma, Washington. He works with aspiring K-12 teachers in the areas of social studies and literacy education. He also teaches classes focused on issues of education and social justice. Terence is particularly interested in classroom conversations that engage diverse students in thinking and exploring big and often controversial ideas. Terence taught in elementary and middle schools for 11 years before serving nine years as an elementary school principal.

About the Author Konstantinos E. Farsalinos, M.D., is a research fellow at the Onassis Cardiac Surgery Center in Athens, Greece, and at the Department of Pharmacy, University of Patras, Greece. He has been conducting laboratory and clinical research on e-cigarettes as a principal investigator since 2011. Examples of his work include the first study on the cytotoxic effects of e-cigarette vapor on cultured cells and the immediate effects of e-cigarette use on cardiac function and coronary circulation. He ran a worldwide online survey of almost 20,000 vapers (users of e-cigarettes) identifying patterns of use and experience with e-cigarettes among consumers, published in 2014. He has presented his research findings at major international scientific congresses and his research was used in preparing the regulatory framework on e-cigarettes by the European Union. As of 2016, he has published more than 40 studies and articles in international peer-reviewed scientific journals about smoking, tobacco harm reduction, and e-cigarettes.Gene Gillman received his PhD in Chemistry from Wake Forest University, Winston-Salem, North Carolina. He is now Laboratory Director at Enthalpy Analytical, Inc., Durham, North Carolina. He has considerable experience in investigating the constituents and chemistry of tobacco smoke, and in developing and validating relevant LC, LC-MS, GC-MS, and biological based test methods. His laboratory focuses on the properties of carcinogenic nitrosamines, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, and aldehydes. Using state-of-the-art mass spectrometry and related techniques, he has developed analytical methods for quantitation of carcinogen and toxicant metabolites and DNA adducts in laboratory animals and in human urine, blood, and tissues. These biomarkers are applied in collaborative clinical and epidemiologic studies. Stable isotope-labelled carcinogens and their analogues are employed in tobacco users to track individual differences in metabolism. The effects of naturally occurring potentially cancer-chemopreventive compounds on carcinogen metabolism in humans are also investigated. Among his numerous distinctions, Dr. Hecht has authored or co-authored over 700 peer-reviewed research publications, is Editor-in-Chief of Chemical Research in Toxicology, and in 2014 was named an American Association for the Advancement of Science Fellow.Riccardo Polosa is the Director of the Institute for Internal Medicine and Clinical Immunology of the University of Catania, Italy. He is also in charge of the University's Centre for Tobacco Research (CPCT) and is Honorary Professor of Medicine at University of Southampton, UK. An internationally recognized leader in the field of clinical bronchoprovocation (airway-challenge studies), he has published more than 250 peer-reviewed articles and books, mainly on respiratory medicine, clinical immunology, and tobacco addiction. After many years of service as President of the Italian Anti-Smoking League (LIAF: Lega Italiana Anti Fumo), he now serves as its Chief Scientific Advisor.Jonathan Thornburg received his PhD in aerosol physics and engineering from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. He is Director of Exposure and Aerosol Technology at RTI International. His research interests over several decades involve four key areas of expertise: (1) development of aerosol exposure instrumentation, (2) aerosol exposure modelling, (3) understanding the physical and chemical properties of aerosols and (4) understanding aerosol fate and transport in outdoor and indoor environments. These cornerstones are applied in laboratory and field studies to effectively research the entire exposure-dose-response paradigm. He recently led a study of e-cigarette emissions characteristics and the potential for second-hand exposure. The study found that emissions are a mixture of nanometer-size particles and vapors composed of the carrier liquid, nicotine, flavorings, and artificial colors. Respiratory deposition modelling predicted that more than half of the emissions are exhaled into the ambient air by the user, so the potential for second-hand exposure is high.

Danai Gurira is an award-winning Zimbabwean American actor and playwright. As a playwright, her works include In The Continuum (OBIE Award, Outer Critics Award, Helen Hayes Award), Eclipsed (NAACP Award; Helen Hayes Award, Best New Play), The Convert (six Ovation Awards, Los Angeles Outer Critics Award), and Familiar, which has its world premiere at Yale Rep in February 2015. All her works explore the subjective African voice. She is the recipient of the Whiting Award, is a former Hodder Fellow, and has been commissioned by Yale Rep, Center Theatre Group, Playwrights Horizons, and the Royal Court. She is currently developing a pilot for HBO. As an actor, she has appeared in the films The Visitor, Mother of George, 3 Backyards, and the television show Treme, among others. She currently plays Michonne on AMC's The Walking Dead. She is the co-founder of Almasi Collaborative Arts, which works to give access and opportunity to the African Dramatic Artist.
